At least 1,400 children; that’s the official count. But in truth, the number is likely far higher. Between 1997 and 2013, in the quiet English town of Rotherham, something unspeakable unfolded: a cycle of rape, torture, and trafficking of children that persisted for over 16 years. The horror wasn’t just in the acts themselves, but in the systemic indifference that allowed them to continue. Reports were filed, victims spoke, evidence piled up, yet those in power turned a blind eye. Why?
The conversation pushes beyond simple binaries. We examine how challenges to a unified identity aren’t just external; they also come from within minority communities, where internal pressures can sometimes clash with broader national values, such as secular law. A key problem identified is the damaging tendency to treat diverse communities as monolithic blocks, erasing individual stories and complex identities under reductive stereotypes.
At the claimed age of 89, Singh began training seriously, showing up to his first session in a three-piece suit. Initially unaware that a marathon stretched 42 kilometers, not 26, his journey began with endearing innocence but soon evolved into disciplined determination. His commitment deepened, culminating in a remarkable debut at the 2000 London Marathon.
While American media frames Mamdani as both a symbol of progressive insurgency and a controversial newcomer, Indian diaspora responses have been even more divided. Initial pride in his Indian heritage quickly gave way to outrage when his past criticisms of Prime Minister Narendra Modi resurfaced, particularly his description of Modi as a “war criminal” in relation to the 2002 Gujarat riots. Right-wing Indian media and diaspora conservatives have since vilified him, questioning his “Indianness” due to his Muslim identity and his stance on Hindu nationalism.
The conversation also dives into safeguards and ethical oversight, debunking the common misconception that legal assisted dying leads to abuse or coercion. Instead, Luley underscores how strict regulation, robust psychological evaluation, and a transparent medical-legal process ensure that this right is not only protected but responsibly practiced.
Nitschke’s argument transcends the “right to die” to a more profound “right to live, the fundamental right to autonomy and choice in how one lives and ends their life. He critiques the arbitrary imposition of societal and religious doctrines on these personal decisions. He also highlights the hypocrisy of a world that deems an 18-year-old’s desire to end their life a “tragedy” while readily arming them for war. He challenges the prevailing strategy of dealing with suicide through censorship and restriction of information, rather than addressing underlying societal issues.
St. Lucia stands on the edge of reinvention or regression. Will it reclaim its soul or remain trapped in a cycle of dependency? This episode will compel every St. Lucian to rethink their ideas on national identity and national prosperity and dare them to ask: What are you voting for? And what future will you build?
The recent Bollywood film Emergency has ignited a firestorm of controversy, particularly regarding its depiction of India’s Emergency period—a time of immense political turmoil that disproportionately affected many, including the Sikh community. Protests erupted not just in India but across the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, with critics condemning the film as a gross misrepresentation of historical events and a distortion of minority perspectives.
The humanitarian outlook for 2025 predicts an increase in global needs, with 305 million people requiring assistance. This stark reality demands solidarity, proactive measures, and a commitment to addressing root causes rather than mere symptoms. As we welcome a new year, let us not just celebrate but also renew our resolve to advocate for policies that uphold humanity, equity, and resilience.
As tensions between Canada and India escalate, we’re forced to confront profound questions about our sense of self and belonging. In this episode of “Topical,” Rajan Nazran brings together Sounder Dilipan and Jasveer Singh for a candid conversation about the recent events, their implications, and the underlying issues they expose.
This isn’t just about lost lives or ruined landscapes; it’s about the crumbling of the progress we’ve spent decades building. The reality is hard-hitting: climate change is undoing years of development, leaving us teetering on the edge of an irreversible crisis.
But it’s not too late to turn the tide. Amidst this chaos, there is hope. As global citizens, we still have the power to shift the narrative—if we act now.
It has been 12 years since the brutal gangrape incident in the national capital, Delhi, but its wounds are still fresh. We had yet to fully comprehend the depths of human depravity, as exemplified by one of the most heinous crimes the world has witnessed in recent times.
Yet, the news of another shocking incident is enough to send shivers down the spine of even the most cold-hearted.
With his expert analysis, Lord Desai unravels the complexities behind the UK riots and their chilling implications for global affairs. He challenges us to reconsider the ideal of a multicultural society and the cautious steps needed to navigate its inherent challenges.
Vimal Shah, our guest on “Topical” this week, offers a sliver of hope. He calls it a “national reset,” a chance for the youth to finally be heard. They’re no longer content with empty promises; they demand answers and action against corruption and arrogance. This isn’t rebellion; it’s the roar of a generation ignored for too long.
In the latest episode of “Topical,” Jamie Gillies and Hardeep Singh navigate the treacherous waters of this legislation. They unveil the unsettling reality where the mere perception of hate could condemn individuals to the label of societal pariahs. The sword of censorship hangs precariously over those who dare to voice dissenting views, stifling the robust dialogue essential for progress.
Against the backdrop of a foreign culture, Jogiraj unveils the intricacies of sustaining Indian art, particularly music and dance, infusing it with unwavering passion and ensuring its commercial viability. Beyond the melodies, he confronts stereotypes surrounding Bollywood music, signalling a hopeful shift.
In a nation as vast and democratic as India, home to 1.42 billion citizens, assessing the extent to which democracy prevails becomes a critical inquiry. What defines the threshold of democracy? How much is deemed excessive?
The scandal has become a political football, especially with elections on the horizon. Those in power must understand public sentiment and address expectations. Addressing the broader context of governance failures, Pallavi Devulapalli from the Green Party, in a recent episode of Topical, describes the scandal as a systemic failure orchestrated by the government.
In the quiet streets of Wolverhampton, a sinister and heartbreaking incident unfolded, shattering the peace of a seemingly ordinary day in June 2022. Ronan Kanda, a 16-year-old with his whole life ahead of him, met a tragically untimely end just yards away from his family home. A seemingly routine errand to purchase a PlayStation controller from a friend led him to unimaginable horror.
