The Great New Year Escape in Zambia

One would think that whatever happens on New Year's Day will be carried throughout the year. For good things, it is a big YES. For bad, it is a big NO. In some instances, what is good for one is bad for another.

Our story depicts this paradox.

See the plight of a jail officer in Zambia. On New Year's Eve 2025, he was feeling rather expansive and generous. He helped some prisoners leave the jail of Leonard Cheelo police station in Lusaka. He was intoxicated and had no clue what he was doing.

Imagine the delight of the 13 inmates, including the women who got out! The crimes (their expertise, rather) against them were a mixed bag of robbery, burglary and assault. Never in their wildest dreams would they have expected such a gift.

Detective Inspector Titus Phiri came to his senses later and, upon realizing that he might soon be an inmate, fled.

So, the current status is that prisoners and the ‘kind’ officer are on the run. We wonder how this story will end. Will it be sad or happy? Whatever it is, we were imagining the situation if the heroic officer had inadvertently locked himself up.
