About Egon von Foidl

Egon von Foidl is a prominent Austrian hotelier known for his dynamic leadership as the Managing Director of Courtyard by Marriott in Paramaribo, Suriname. His journey in the hospitality industry began with a formal education at a hotel school in Austria, where he specialised as a chef. This foundational experience instilled in him a deep understanding of the culinary arts and the challenges of hospitality, which he believes are crucial to delivering exceptional service.

After graduating, von Foidl quickly rose through the ranks, becoming one of the youngest Executive Chefs in Austria. His career took a significant turn when he moved to South Africa, where he spent five years learning about hotel management and working with diverse cultures. He later worked in England and Austria before immigrating to Canada, where his career flourished across various prestigious hotel chains in North America.

In his mid-thirties, von Foidl reached the pinnacle of the hotel industry, serving as president for several five-star establishments, including Windsor Arms Group and Ritz Carlton Hotels in Washington D.C. and New York City. Seeking new challenges, he founded HRG International, a development and consulting firm that undertook projects across Canada, the USA, China, Eastern Europe, and the Caribbean.

Under his stewardship, Courtyard by Marriott has transformed from an unknown entity into one of Suriname’s leading hotels. He emphasises the importance of every staff member in creating a welcoming environment and regularly engages with his team to ensure they understand all aspects of hotel operations. His management philosophy centers on empowerment and collaboration, fostering a culture where every employee feels valued.

Von Foidl is also dedicated to enhancing Suriname’s tourism sector through initiatives like SHATA (the Suriname Hotel and Tourism Association), which aims to improve service standards and promote public-private partnerships. His vision for the hotel includes ongoing renovations and innovative service offerings catering to local and international guests.
