Biography

The Story

H.E. Ugwumba Uche Nwosu is one of Nigeria's most prominent political figures and community builders — a certified town planner, serial entrepreneur, and committed advocate for African youth empowerment. Born on 8 August 1975 in Umunwokwe, Eziama-Obaire, Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo State, he has built a career that bridges governance, enterprise, and social impact across Nigeria and beyond. He is married to Uloma Nwosu, the eldest daughter of former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha, and together they have three sons.

Education and Early Career

Nwosu's educational journey began at Shehu Sanda Kerimi Primary School in Maiduguri, Borno State, before he completed his secondary education at Comprehensive Secondary School, Eziama-Obaire, Imo State. He earned a B.Sc. (Second Class Honours) in Urban and Regional Planning from Imo State University, Owerri. He has since furthered his academic credentials with a Postgraduate Diploma in Management and a Master's degree in Public Governance from the University of Liverpool, UK. He is also a Chartered Management Consultant of Vancouver, Canada (ChMC) and holds memberships in the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (MNITP) and the Chartered Institute of Corporate Administrators of Nigeria (FCAI).

After graduating, Nwosu served in several advisory and executive roles — including as Personal Assistant to the President of Rochas Foundation International, Executive Assistant to the President of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, and Executive Assistant to the Special Adviser on Inter-Party Relations to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria — before entering active politics in 2009.

Political Career and Government Service

In June 2011, Nwosu was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff to the Imo State Government by then-Governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha. His performance led to his elevation as Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Urban Planning from 2013 to 2015, during which he was honoured as the Best Commissioner in Urban Development in Nigeria in November 2014. He subsequently served as Chief of Staff to the Imo State Government from 2015 to 2019 — a role that earned him a national award as the Best Performed and Youth-Friendly Chief of Staff across the federation.

In 2019, he contested the Imo State governorship election as the candidate of the Action Alliance Party (AA), widely recognised as the most popular candidate among Imo's youth. Though he did not win, the race confirmed his standing as a major political force in the South-East. He remains an active and prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), having revalidated his membership in 2026 and affirmed his commitment to the party he helped build: "I will not abandon a house I helped to build."

Entrepreneurship and Business Leadership

Beyond politics, Nwosu is a hands-on serial entrepreneur with diversified business interests spanning agriculture, real estate, hospitality, aviation, and human resources management. He serves as Chairman of Ezihe Farms Nigeria Ltd, a significant agribusiness enterprise, and is active in real estate development and consultancy — leveraging his professional background as a certified town planner. His ventures reflect a deliberate philosophy of economic empowerment rooted in local communities.

Ugwumba Centre for Leadership Development

The cornerstone of Nwosu's post-government impact is the Ugwumba Centre for Leadership Development in Africa (UCLDA), which he founded and leads as President. Since its inception in 2019, the Centre has empowered over 1,000 young people across Nigeria through the Ugwumba Leadership Academy, the Ugwumba Enterprise Challenge, and allied programmes supporting young and women entrepreneurs. The Centre also invests in rural infrastructure, education, and healthcare across communities in Imo State.

In a significant recognition of this work, UN-Habitat — the United Nations Human Settlement Programme — appointed Nwosu as its Special Youth Envoy, making him the first to hold this newly created title. The designation, reserved for outstanding personalities under 55 who have made exceptional contributions to youth employment, leadership, and innovation, affirmed UCLDA's standing as a continent-wide institution.

Ezihe Foundation and Community Impact

Nwosu also oversees the Ezihe Foundation, a humanitarian platform focused on community-driven development in Imo State. Since its founding in 2014, the Foundation has empowered over 5,000 Imo youths, constructed five markets across five communities, distributed business starter kits to 1,000 young people and women, renovated ten churches, sunk twenty boreholes across twenty communities, and awarded educational scholarships to 100 Imo indigenes. These interventions reflect his stated mission: to be "a bridge builder between the rich and the poor, the old and the young."

Honours, Titles, and International Recognition

Nwosu's contributions have been recognised across cultural, national, and international spheres. His traditional titles include Ugwumba of Eziama Obaire, Ugwumba Orlu Zone, Ugwumba Ndi Imo (conferred by the Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers), and the historic Dan Zaki of Dass Emirate — making him the first non-Muslim to receive this distinction from His Majesty Alhaji Bilyaminu Usman Othman, the Emir of Dass, Bauchi State. Internationally, he received the African Youth Empowerment Award from the Africa Achievers Awards International at the UK House of Parliament, and a Certificate of Recognition from US Senator Curren D. Price for his contributions to humanity.
