Founded by Bala as a grassroots initiative, Startup Iceland has grown into the country's premier platform for connecting founders, investors, and policymakers. The annual Startup Iceland conference has attracted international coverage from Forbes, the Huffington Post, Business Insider, and others — with Forbes describing Iceland as "remaking an economy through entrepreneurship" in direct reference to the movement Bala catalysed. The conference draws speakers and attendees from across the global startup community and has become a reliable signal of Iceland's seriousness as a technology nation.
Bala also co-founded Dattaca Labs alongside Freyr Ketilsson, an innovation and technology venture that has contributed to the broader Icelandic digital economy. He has additionally served as Executive Board Member for both Guide to Iceland and TravelShift — two of Iceland's most prominent tourism-technology companies — bringing entrepreneurial governance expertise to businesses operating at the intersection of technology and one of Iceland's most important economic sectors.
Iceland Venture Studio
Iceland Venture Studio (IVS), which Bala co-founded and leads as Managing Director, is the first fund dedicated to the Icelandic tech startup community. IVS raised an initial $1 million fund, followed by a $2 million raise and an announced $5 million fund — with a portfolio that spans Iceland, Silicon Valley, Israel, and India. The studio is deliberately location-agnostic in its ambitions: as Bala has stated, "We want to leverage the country of Iceland to solve global problems partnering with global founders. Iceland is perfect to test and validate the early risks of startups like product development, team development, and product-market fit."
IVS portfolio companies include RetinaRisk — an algorithm that predicts diabetic retinopathy years in advance — and Flow, which develops VR-enhanced meditation programmes. The studio provides founders with a multi-disciplinary team of developers, designers, marketers, analysts, and operators, alongside its capital, operating as a genuine partner rather than a passive investor.
Investment Track Record
Bala's personal investment track record across early-stage companies is notable for the calibre of exits it has produced. His portfolio includes: CLARA (Resonata), the Icelandic community analytics company he chaired, which became the first Icelandic company acquired by a Silicon Valley firm — Jive Software (Nasdaq: JIVE) — in 2013; Buuteeq, acquired by Priceline.com (Nasdaq: PCLN); GreenQloud, acquired by NetApp (Nasdaq: NTAP); Genome Compiler, acquired by Twist Biosciences (Nasdaq: TWST); Mattermark, the business intelligence platform; and RetinaRisk, an ongoing IVS portfolio investment. Guide to Iceland, in which Bala served as an Executive Board Member, achieved profitable scale and won the Deloitte Fast 50 in Iceland, placing third across all of Europe.
Teaching, Community, and Wider Leadership
Alongside his entrepreneurial work, Bala has served as a course instructor at Reykjavik University, bringing practitioner-level insight into the classroom. He is an active member of the Reykjavik Rotary International Club, and has served as Chairman of the Iceland Cricket Association — a role that reflects his commitment to community life beyond the startup world, and his broader effort to build bridges between Iceland's international diaspora communities and the country's civic institutions.
Academic Background
Bala holds a management degree from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani — one of India's most prestigious engineering and management institutions. He earned two Master's degrees from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge: one in Economics and one in Information Systems and Decision Sciences. He also passed the qualifying examination for a PhD in Economics, reflecting the depth of his academic preparation before moving into corporate and entrepreneurial life.

This is a vital platform, bridging global opportunities and curates deeper meaningful connections.
