The Hero East Africa Needed – Willy Mutenza

London has always been a magnet for the world's dignitaries—from Middle Eastern royalty to ministers from the distant islands of Vanuatu. With its mix of bustling streets and historic halls, the city has firmly established itself as the beating heart of global diplomacy. So, it came as no surprise to see a parade of African dignitaries making their way through Mayfair on the 6th of September for an event poised to influence the foreign affairs of an entire region. But if you're expecting another article extolling the virtues of prosperity, diplomacy, and cultural interdependence, this isn’t it.

This is a story about the people who make progress possible—the unsung heroes who do the heavy lifting in the shadows. Among them is a man I’ve known for many years, someone who has quietly achieved more for his region’s destiny than entire ministries have managed in a lifetime. His name is Willy Mutenza. For over twenty-five years, Willy has been at the heart of vital discussions, orchestrating dialogues and fostering connections that often go unnoticed by the general public, but for those in the know, they can change the course of prosperity for nations.

The recent summit was a testament to his commitment. It wasn’t just a gathering of prime ministers, ministers, and business leaders from East Africa but an assembly infused with localised insights—a crucial bridge for UK investors eyeing opportunities in the region. I was invited to moderate a panel discussion on East Africa’s diplomatic future. My panel brought together dignitaries from South Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Somalia and Tanzania, each with unique perspectives to share. It was a conversation that promised to be as challenging as it was enlightening.

Willy isn’t one to seek the limelight. In a world of noisy voices, loud shirts, and even louder egos, he could easily be overlooked. But for those who know him, it’s precisely his humility that makes his talents extraordinary. Willy moves effortlessly among senior African dignitaries, connecting people with the finesse of a master conductor. If there were a modern-day Aladdin’s lamp for networking, Willy would surely hold it. Even the corridors of Whitehall might envy his contact list. Yet despite his many successes, he remains the invisible hand—bridging the hopes, needs, and ambitions of an entire region to UK and global investors with a dedication that seems almost saintly.

So, when Willy asked if I would host a panel at the summit, I was humbled, knowing the gravity of the conversations that would unfold. Moments like these reveal just how deeply he cares for the African continent and his unwavering commitment to bringing the right people together for meaningful dialogue.

In short, in a world of noise, where integrity is a passing phrase rather than a commitment, Willy is an unsung hero whose actions have spoken louder than most nations' commitments to national prosperity building. His work, which directly challenges the status quo, is a testimony that there are people who work on the sidelines who deserve the recognition that some are awarded for being average... but loud.
