India, Indian Diaspora, and the Upcoming Trump Administration: An Evolving Relationship

With Donald Trump going back to the White House, huge questions arise about how a new Trump administration might affect the U.S.–India relationship, based on India's growing importance in shaping U.S. policy and a fluid and dynamic world order. Donald Trump's administration, between the years 2017 and 2021, marked unprecedented efforts to make closer ties with India. Therefore, India will enter a new chapter in its relationship since Trump returned to office again.

Strengthening U.S.- India Relations

In the initial years of his term, Donald Trump focused more on flourishing US-India bilateral relations. Because both countries share concerns over growing Chinese influence, the partnership between Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi was forged on defence, trade, and counter-terrorism practices. The deal saw both parties’ benefit: the USA to have an ally like India, given China's growing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific, and India in these partnerships that understood the quest for stability in Asia as much as the USA.

Diplomatically, the chemistry between the two leaders translated into warm relations which, besides a handful of other examples, included a historic visit of the US president to India in 2020, enough to show just how important India was to US foreign policy.

A second Trump administration could strengthen this partnership. Trump has always leaned toward bilateral relations with nations that could offer economic or geopolitical advantages to the United States, and India checks both boxes. India's booming economy, technology, and demographics thus make it an attractive partner. This alignment of newly refreshed defence deals, availability of expanded trade agreements, and India’s integration into key global forums will strengthen the existing relationship.

The Indian Diaspora: An Influential Community in the U.S.

Indian diaspora in the United States is one of the fastest-growing and most economically influential immigrant communities, with approximately 4.8 million estimated members. Indian Americans contribute an indelible mark across diverse spectra, from technology and healthcare through politics to academia. Characterized as one highly educated immigrant group, Indian Americans hold significant corporate, government, and academic positions in major United States corporations. This community has also gained visibility in American politics, with several Indian Americans elected to Congress and many serving in influential policy roles.

Under Trump’s previous administration, mixed policies for the Indian Diaspora were adopted. On the one hand, Trump appreciated the economic contributions of Indian Americans, with events like the "Howdy Modi" rally in Houston hitting the headlines. On the other hand, the immigration policies of his administration were restrictive, which posed great difficulties for many Indians who wanted to work or settle in the U.S. The future could see pro-business options from Trump on skilled immigration, driving the process toward growth spurts in the Indian diaspora, especially tech and STEM experts."

With the return of Trump, he might be set to work with a new perspective on immigration, balancing the need from the business healthcare sector and his whole government, illegal immigration reform itself. They were likely to set a good environment for these skilled Indian workers, especially in technology, healthcare, and finance, with a more convenient pathway toward work opportunities. It could build back ties with the Indian American community and extend its influence within the political framework.

Trade and Economic Cooperation

Relations over time have seen steady economic growth; however, many events stemming either from the white house or India under Trump have proven both positive yet controversial points for relations between the U.S. and India.

Trump, who had originally called India a “tariff king” because of high tariffs on American products, wanted to reduce trade imbalances in favour of the US and sign a good trade deal. While significant headway was made, a new trade deal faltered on the need for lower farm tariffs and stricter data localization requirements in India. A Trump second term might well pick these issues up but probably would want a trade deal that worked to the benefit of US exports while meeting India’s developmental goals.

U.S.-India trade is fundamental to both economies, with the U.S. being India's largest trading partner. So, to improve this trade relationship, revisiting the previous negotiations and plans for new sectors like green technology, pharmaceuticals, and digital services would be involved. India, as a tech and pharma hub, helps make her an ideal partner, particularly in lessening the reliance on Chinese manufacturing. Also, the United States could leverage the growing demand for clean energy technology from India to serve larger geopolitical objectives.

Defence and Strategic Cooperation

Under a renewed Trump administration, defence cooperation could continue to flourish. Trump has long been a proponent of the idea that strong partnerships with democratic nations can counter authoritarian influences. India’s positioning as a key democracy in Asia aligns with this vision, making it likely that a second Trump administration would support India’s defence modernization efforts and its ambitions to play a larger regional role. This partnership could involve more significant defence sales, joint military exercises, and collaboration in cybersecurity and space exploration.

Agreements such as the Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement (COMCASA) and the Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement (BECA) marked a new strategic level of relationship that addressed key tactical and logistical issues for cooperation with India. Placing India in the Indo-Pacific strategy under President Trump has countered Chinese influence in the region, which has upped the military cooperation in terms of exercises and operations. The ongoing negotiations of the Quad (Quadrilateral Security Arrangement) alliance of the U.S., Japan, and Australia have shown India’s prominent position in this strategy.

A re-elected Trump will take defence cooperation to a higher level. Trump in his previous term did not hesitate to advocate for a strong partnership of democracies against authoritarianism. As a key democracy in Asia, such a vision for alignment would not only help defend India's steadfast modernization but also view it as a key regional player. This partnership may result in increased sales of defence equipment, more joint operational exercises, and enhanced Coast Guards’ anti-terrorism and cyber cooperation as well as in space exploration.

Conclusion: An Opportunity for Mutual Growth

Trump, walking into the White House, will truly consolidate the spirit of U.S.-India relations. Considered to complement one another on many strategic issues, including security, trade, and worldwide stability, the Indian diaspora's heightened influence in America brings both countries closer. While furthering alliances with India, Trump might stabilize the region, allowing a partnership to develop those addresses both challenges and opportunities posed by a complicated geopolitical landscape.

The U.S.-India relationship would see greater trade ties, defence cooperation, and diaspora bonds strengthened under a reinstated Trump administration, which will permit the countries to realize their common mission for peace and prosperity in a changing global order.
