Inside the Next Energy Revolution With Upendra Tripathy

What if the future of economic prosperity isn’t buried beneath the earth, but shining above it every day?

In this episode of the Brown Business Podcast, part of our Member Stories, Rajan Nazran sits down with Upendra Tripathy, the founding Director-General of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and one of the key architects of India’s renewable energy transformation. What follows is not simply a discussion about solar power. It is a conversation about leadership, institution-building, national development, and how bold ideas can evolve into global movements.

Tripathy takes us behind the scenes of a pivotal period in India’s energy journey, reflecting on the alignment of political vision, policy leadership, and institutional execution that helped accelerate renewable energy adoption. He shares insights into the origins of the International Solar Alliance, a platform launched to unite nations around a common solar agenda and make clean energy more accessible across the developing world.

Yet what makes this conversation especially compelling is that it challenges several assumptions that continue to shape the global energy debate. While many discussions focus on climate targets and emissions, Tripathy repeatedly returns to a more fundamental question: how can energy improve lives? For him, the conversation is ultimately about people, about employment, opportunity, development, and ensuring that access to energy becomes a pathway to prosperity.

The discussion also explores how dramatically the renewable energy landscape has changed over the past decade. Technologies once considered expensive or impractical are now competing on cost and scale in ways few predicted. But Tripathy argues that some of the most important innovations may still lie ahead, particularly in energy storage, distributed generation, and new ways of thinking about how power is produced and consumed.

One of the most thought-provoking moments comes when the conversation shifts beyond today’s energy systems to the possibility of a future in which communities become increasingly self-sufficient in their energy needs. Rather than treating existing infrastructure as permanent, Tripathy invites listeners to imagine how technological advances could fundamentally reshape the way societies generate and distribute power.

The episode also delves into the challenges that remain. While solar energy has achieved remarkable progress, access to technology, investment, and financing remains uneven across regions. Tripathy discusses why the next phase of the global energy transition may depend as much on innovative financial structures and international cooperation as on technological breakthroughs themselves.

For business leaders, policymakers, investors, and entrepreneurs, this conversation offers something deeper than a discussion of renewable energy. It raises broader questions about how institutions are built, how transformative ideas gain momentum, and how nations can convert long-term vision into tangible outcomes. It is also a reminder that some of the world’s biggest challenges often require thinking beyond traditional boundaries and embracing solutions that connect countries rather than divide them.

If you’re interested in the future of energy, the evolution of global cooperation, or the mindset required to drive large-scale change, this is a conversation worth hearing in full.
