World Development Information Day 2024: Celebrating Global Cooperation for Development

World Development Information Day 2024 will be celebrated on 24 October, marking its 51st anniversary. It was first held on 24 October 1973 and has been regularly held on the same day since then. Sponsored by the United Nations General Assembly, this day's significance lies in improving the dissemination of information and mobilizing public opinion to increase awareness about the problems of development. 

A further aim is to explain to the general public why strengthening international cooperation is necessary to find ways to solve these problems. The United Nations Day is also celebrated on the same day, which stresses the central role of development in the UN's work.

The History of World Development Information Day

Since the 1970s, Governments have dedicated themselves to creating conditions of stability and well-being and ensuring a minimum standard of living that goes in line with economic and social progress and development according to the Charter of the United Nations. However, the standard of living all over the world continues to be low; most of the problems are undernourishment, unemployment, insufficient education, and even the lack of basic amenities. However, these problems should not be viewed as obstacles to the larger developmental goals.

The ultimate objective of development is benefits to all. If social and economic injustice persists, development fails in its purpose. The international community should, therefore, face the challenges of the present age of opportunities given by scientific and technological advances so that they are shared impartially among all countries to contribute to progress and development.

Given this, on 17 May 1972, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development proposed measures for disseminating information and mobilizing public opinion about trade and development problems. Additionally, on 24 October 1970, the United Nations adopted the International Development Strategy for the Second United Nations Development Decade.

The Day's Objectives

World Development Information Day 2024 has two primary objectives:

1. To draw the attention of the world to development problems and the need to strengthen international cooperation to solve them, 
2. To improve the dissemination of information and the mobilization of public opinion relative to development problems, particularly among young people, since youth can be the catalyst that helps further international cooperation for development.

Mobilization of public opinion is a crucial factor in both developing and developed countries. Development efforts are interdependent among various nations, and governments need to advance conscious endeavours to achieve this. More advanced countries should intensify public understanding of this interdependence to accelerate the social and economic progress of developing nations. Governments either establish new national bodies or strengthen already existing ones to mobilize public opinion in the long run. Therefore, strong leadership is indispensable to development, and so are tangible aims that need to be realized. 

The role of the United Nations in this regard is to assist national forms of information media by supplying adequate basic information from which these media may draw both substance and inspiration for their work.

The digital divide is an increasing challenge that the world is currently facing. World Development Information Day 2024 can help to address this problem in the following ways:

1. Science and technology: As time goes on, so does our knowledge of science. While the future might appear scary in the claws of technology, we inevitably have to live with it. So, to ensure that all countries benefit equally from it, developing countries should increase their expenditure on research and development.
