Biography

The Story

Anisa Singh, known to audiences across the West Indian diaspora as Princess Anisa — is one of the most versatile and purposeful figures in Guyanese-American cultural life. Born in Texas to Guyanese parents and raised across two cultural worlds, she has built a career that defies easy categorisation: a celebrated Chutney Soca singer, serial entrepreneur, published author, Certified Life Coach, mental health advocate, and philanthropist whose work consistently centres the empowerment of others. She is an inductee of the prestigious Marquis Who's Who, a Global Indian Ambassador of Arts and Empowerment, and a Global Citizen Activist — identities that together reflect a woman who has turned her own experiences and gifts into instruments of collective uplift.

A Voice Rooted in Guyanese Heritage

Anisa's relationship with performance began early and in earnest. Growing up immersed in Guyanese and West Indian culture, she was a dancer, dance teacher, and choreographer before she ever stepped to a microphone. At just thirteen years old, she won the 1996 National Mashramani Competitions in Guyana — the country's celebrated republic day festival, one of the Caribbean's most competitive cultural platforms — earning her the nickname 'Princess' that has defined her stage identity ever since.

Her vocal range is exceptional and deliberately catholic. Her repertoire spans Soca, Chutney, Reggae, Filmi, Pop, Dance, EDM, Techno, and songs in Spanish and Portuguese — a versatility that has allowed her to move fluidly across the West Indian and South Asian diaspora music scenes in the United States and internationally. This breadth is not incidental: it reflects a deep-seated belief in music as a bridge between cultures and generations.

The Supertone

In 1999, Anisa joined The Supertones Band — then based in New York — as lead female vocalist alongside King Raj, under the management of Avinash Singh. Over more than twenty years with the band, she helped build The Supertones into the USA's most toured International Chutney Soca band, performing across the United States and Canada as well as in Guyana, Suriname, Holland, London, and Spain. She also performs as a frontline singer for Latitude28, extending her reach across the West Indian music landscape.

The Supertones are notable not only for their longevity and touring reach but for a series of creative firsts: they were the first Chutney Soca band to perform off-Broadway, and the first Chutney band to launch an app in the iPhone and Android markets. Their live performances are known for high energy, audience interaction, and a conscious commitment to including children — with popular singalongs that make their shows multigenerational events.

Anisa's signature hit, 'Tek Sunita (Nadia's Reply)', won Video of the Year at the 2011 West Indian Music Awards and remained number one on the charts for most of 2010. In 2013, she took home the Female Singer of the Year trophy at the West Indian Music Awards — a recognition of both her talent and her sustained impact on the genre. Her other notable tracks include 'Brown Sugar Too Bitter for Me,' 'Forgotten Promise,' and 'Making It with Latitude28.'

Education, Mental Health & Certified Life Coaching

Beneath the stage lights, Anisa has built a rigorous academic and professional foundation in human wellbeing. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Sociology, and a Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling — a combination that reflects both her intellectual interests and her personal commitment to the psychological health of individuals and communities. She is also a Certified Life Coach, a credential she deploys in her advocacy, mentoring, and writing work.

This educational foundation shapes everything she does beyond music. Her affinity for children and teenagers — who make up a significant portion of her audience — is not simply a performer's intuition: it is the expression of a trained mind attuned to developmental psychology, the importance of positive reinforcement, and the long-term impact of the messages that young people absorb. Wherever she goes, she emphasises education and positivity as foundations for a life of purpose.

Author and Advocate

In one of the most personally courageous acts of her public life, Anisa published Scarred Wings Still Fly — a book that draws on first-hand experience to illuminate the realities of abusive relationships and the arduous but possible path to freedom and healing. The book follows a woman's journey from abuse to purpose: giving first-hand accounts of what makes abusive relationships possible even for strong women, why breaking free is so difficult, and how the aftermath of abuse can in many ways be more damaging than the abuse itself.

Written in a direct, conversational style that connects immediately with readers, Scarred Wings Still Fly has been described as a must-read for anyone familiar with domestic violence — both those experiencing it and those seeking to understand it. It is short enough to be read quickly and safely, but packs, in its own words, 'invaluable information, motivation and inspiration.' The book embodies Anisa's core conviction: that her own experiences, including her wounds, exist to serve others.

Entrepreneurship, Philanthropy, & a Life of Service

Alongside her artistic and advocacy careers, Anisa is a practising serial entrepreneur. She manages two businesses — a travel agency and a contracting and recruiting company — demonstrating the practical business acumen that sits alongside her creative and humanitarian impulses. As a philanthropist, she channels resources and visibility toward causes aligned with her core values: domestic violence awareness, mental health, education, and the empowerment of marginalised individuals.

Her induction into Marquis Who's Who — one of the most respected biographical reference registries in the United States, recognising outstanding achievement across professional fields — places her among a distinguished cohort of American professionals whose careers have made a measurable difference. Her designation as Global Indian Ambassador of Arts and Empowerment, and Global Citizen Activist, further reflects the international recognition of her work's reach and intentionality.

Anisa currently lives in Florida, where she continues to perform, write, coach, advocate, and build — a woman whose life is, in every sense, an argument that the wings that have been scarred can still carry you further than you imagined.
